Teamwork Makes The Dream Work: A Year Of Collaboration And Contentment At MYC

It’s been 12 months since Ria doubled the numbers of our editorial team. Now, she’s looking back on her year at an agency that’s unlike any other.

When you hear someone talk about their new job, it can often sound a little cheesy or cliché. You might think, ‘there’s no way it can be that good’. And most of the time, you’d be right. But something about MYC was different.

Even before I got the job, I knew this was a company I wanted to work for. The website completely drew me in. And after a year of working from home and not really feeling like part of a team, I was determined to get my face on the Meet Your Makers page.

Soaking in the MYC culture

I’d worked at agencies in the past, so I thought I knew what to expect. Yet when I joined my first team call back in February 2021, you couldn’t have prepared me for the warm welcome I received. Of course, I’ve been with MYC for a year now, so this isn’t really a ‘new’ job anymore – but that doesn’t mean it’s lost its shine.

For us, it’s all about collaboration, teamwork and patting people on the back when they’ve done a good job. Our ‘kudos’ and ‘you okay?’ Slack channels help with that. As do our monthly take-ins, where we all get together to discuss client wins and positive feedback as well as nominate each other for awards.

Working with the best

When it comes to project work, we adopt this same approach. Like the MYC website says, ‘communication is the cornerstone of great strategy’, and that applies internally just as much as externally. Here, everyone gets a say in how we handle things and there’s a real sense of camaraderie – it’s definitely one of the good things about having such a tight-knit team!

For me, my role as editor means I’m heavily involved in everything we do. Thankfully, our other editor Lucinda had already paved the way and set an amazing example. She was a real support as I was getting to grips with my new job, and even now, she’s always on hand to answer my (usually hyphen-related) questions.

Looking to the future

In 2022, we’re mixing things up a bit, and we already have a calendar full of ideas for our twice-weekly Zoom calls. So far, we’ve enjoyed yoga classes and meditation sessions, plus our usual film and book clubs which are always a big hit with the team.

At this point, some companies would probably say ‘it’s not all fun and games’ – but for us, it really is. This last year at MYC has been an absolute joy. I’ve become a better editor, a better communicator, and I’ve had a lot of laughs along the way. No one knows what the future holds, but if it’s anything like the last 12 months, I’ll be happy. You could even say I’ll be content.
