Ever found yourself asking: “How does a copywriting agency actually work?

We get this a lot – and it’s a fair question. There aren’t many content agencies based in the North West, let alone Manchester, so not many people are intimately familiar with the mechanics of a word workshop. Historically, copywriting has been a service provided by marketing departments; companies completely dedicated to scribbling are still rather rare.

With this in mind, we’ve decided to take our readers for a grand tour of Making You Content HQ. Here, you can follow us from the moment we scan into Binks Building at dawn, right up until we unplug from our Macs in the evening.

The prep

Our Manchester copywriters catch up over coffee in the mornings, with our Director Kelly Gilmour-Grassam outlining what’s in store for the day. We’ve all got our own styles and approaches towards writing, which gives us an important degree of diversity and balance, as well as an opportunity to learn from one another.

Some clients will have an exact idea of what they want; others will give us free reign to clatter the computer keys. Numerous projects demand intense research, but several are open-ended, with creativity required to spin an entire piece out of a title. In any instance, it’s crucial to spend time examining the relevant brief.

The process

With the prep in place, Josh and Gareth get to work on the words. Having a clear strategy in place beforehand allows the direction of the piece and brand voice to smoothly unravel, ensuring our copywriters tailor content to the audience and objectives.

The baton is then passed to editor Lucinda, who acts as a brand guardian. Lucinda goes through each piece individually, performing a quality check and tightening up language or plugging gaps where relevant, before sending over to Kelly or the client for publication.

The publication

As content enters the final stage, we collaborate with all the necessary parties to optimise results. Whilst we’re purely dedicated to content here at MYC, we’re also well-aware of the bigger marketing picture; we work closely with clients’ in-house teams and other external partners to ensure our words reach as many eyes as possible.

We co-operate with SEO agencies to help companies climb search engine rankings, side with social media agencies to spread word through channels like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and even work with PR experts for any client who wants to hit the headlines.

The most important thing is that the content meets its original objectives. We’re always looking for ways to refine and improve the impact of our work as we get to know our clients long-term.
