A Different Kind Of Long-Distance Relationship

It’s been a whole year since Courtenay, our very own Tinerfeña, joined the ranks at our content agency. Here, she reflects on the last 12 months…

While plenty of people started new jobs remotely last year, my story is a little different. Unlike the rest of the MYC team, I’m not based in the UK. I’m hundreds of miles away in the sunny Canary Islands – not to brag or anything!

So, although the MYCers were reunited in early 2021 and have since gone on to move into our new digs in Manchester, I’ve only ever seen most of their beautiful faces on my computer screen. But I’ve never felt more like part of the team…

The reason for my move

In my previous role as a freelance writer, there wasn’t a team to speak of. I didn’t attend virtual meetings, and the only time I ever spoke with my ‘colleagues’ was before and after completing a project.

So, in 2020, I decided to go back to full-time work again. I was looking for a job where I could learn new skills, truly be part of a team, and get creative. That’s when I ran the idea past Grace – a close friend of mine and resident designer here at MYC. After hearing nothing but good things from her about the culture of the company, I knew I had to send my CV over.

As luck would have it, Kelly was planning on hiring a new writer to join the crew that very same day. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect…

Remote work works!

To some, being fully remote may sound bleak. For me, it means a better work-life balance, higher productivity, and more time with my family and friends – both furry and human!

Of course, I still attend (and conduct) meetings and gatherings. I just join them virtually using real-time platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams – a trio of apps I couldn’t live without. Oh, and we’re in the same time zone, so I don’t have to worry about missing an important call!

My advice for remote workers looking to quickly settle into a new job? Talk to your team! As simple as it may sound, a quick chat or GIF-off via Slack or WhatsApp works wonders. Trust me, I wasn’t crowned the ‘GIF Queen’ during last year’s MYC awards for nothing…

How is agency work different?

Now, you may be wondering what the difference is between being a freelance writer and working remotely full-time. In my experience, they’re worlds apart!

I previously worked for one company and wrote about the same topic day in, day out – and things quickly became monotonous. At Making You Content, no two days are the same. Aside from my retained clients, I never know what the next project will hold.

It’s been an exciting adventure so far, and I can’t wait to meet the guys face to face (a trip is in the pipelines!). Are you interested in embarking on a similar journey? Here are just a few reasons to join our award-winning content agency…
